Discover

Finding your place at the barre

Not sure where to start? That's the most honest place to begin. We offer a free placement conversation — twenty minutes with a faculty member who listens before recommending. Whether you're enrolling a four-year-old who twirls constantly or returning to dance after fifteen years away, we'll find the right door.

Our four disciplines — classical ballet, contemporary, jazz, and musical theatre — each have their own entry points. Ballet builds the foundation. Contemporary asks you to question it. Jazz brings the pulse. Musical theatre brings the story. Many students discover they want more than one.

Begin

Your first week inside the studio

The first class is never what anyone expects — it's better. The smell of rosin, the sound of the piano warm-up, the way the teacher calls your name like they already knew you were coming. We design first weeks to feel like return visits.

New students receive a welcome packet with their class schedule, faculty bio, and a map of the studio spaces. Parents of younger dancers are invited to watch the first class through our observation window. Adults get a complimentary second class if they want to try a different style before committing.

Grow

Milestones, recitals, and the long arc

Growth in dance isn't linear — it happens in unexpected moments. A teenager nails a triple pirouette after months of frustration. A seven-year-old remembers a combination from six classes ago. An adult returner realizes her body still knows how to find the beat.

Our recital culture is built around celebration, not competition. The Spring Showcase gives every student — from the youngest pre-ballet class to the pre-professional company — a stage, a curtain call, and an audience that cheers. We also hold informal studio sharings every December, low-stakes and warm, just for families.

Perform

Showcases, community, and the wider stage

Performance is where training becomes art. Beyond our studio productions, Barre dancers perform at community events across Portland — the Pearl District arts walk, the Arlene Schnitzer lobby series, and our annual collaboration with Portland Youth Philharmonic.

Pre-professional students in our Company track audition for summer intensives at programs including Boston Ballet, Joffrey, and Alvin Ailey. We've had seven students accepted to performing arts high schools in the last three years. The stage isn't the end goal — it's where you find out what you've been building.

Belong

The studio family beyond the studio

The hallway between studios at 4:45 on a Tuesday is one of our favourite places. Older students helping younger ones find their cubbies. Parents who came in strangers and left with each other's numbers. Teachers who remember your name at the farmer's market.

Belonging at Barre doesn't require anything except showing up. We host three family events a year — a fall potluck, a winter open studio, and a summer rooftop gathering. Our alumni network spans twenty years and four continents. Some of them come back to teach. All of them remember the smell of rosin and the sound of the piano.
